1. What inspired you to join the Mount Merici Academy Board of Trustees, and what aspect of the Academy’s mission resonates with you most deeply?
I was asked to come onto the Board at a very transitional time for the school. Almost the entire Board had left and they were (and are) in a rebuilding mode. While our sons did not attend Mt Merici I was very familiar with the school and its tradition within the community. We actually have friends and relatives who children have attended, and currently attend. During discussions it became clear to me I had prior Board experiences which might be useful moving the school forward. As a born and raised Catholic the mission certainly clicked. I firmly believe in the full mind, body and spirit approach to raising future leaders.
2. What specific expertise, skills, or professional background do you bring to the Board to help guide and support the Academy's strategic direction?
I have served on numerous local, and beyond, Boards in a wide range of capacities ranging from small Boards or 4-5 to larger Boards with over 700 members. Locally I have chaired the Chamber, United Way, Maine Children's Home, Salvation Army and more. I have been Maine's Realtor President, serve on the National Association of Realtors Board (over 700 members), Governor of New England + Bermuda Kiwanis, Kiwanis Foundation of New England and more. I serve as a Corporator for Kennebec Savings Bank and Northern Lights Health. Each of these have provided me with a strong experience in leadership, problem solving, finance and crisis management.
3. In your view, what is the most important value or skill a faith-based, K-8 education provides to today’s students as they prepare for high school and beyond?
Character Development including Integrity, compassion and responsibility, along with a strong foundation of values that guide our students in making ethical decisions.
4. As a board member, what is one major goal or area of focus you are most passionate about contributing to in Mount Merici Academy’s near future?
My heart lies in the finance side of things. This is key to the school's future longevity. My current, and previous, undertakings in the community have provided me with an extensive contact base to draw upon for support. Being able to clearly and strongly articulate the value to the students, and to the entire community is paramount to the school's future.
5.When you are not engaged with the Board or your professional life, what is a hobby, interest, or favorite way to spend your time?
What little down time I have is dedicated to two passions -- I love to read (with an actual book in my hands) and to travel. We are fortunate that we have the opportunity to travel the world and continue to enjoy doing so.
