Mount Merici Academy Named a Maine Top School by Johns Hopkins University

Mount Merici Academy has been named a Maine Top School in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth Talent Search for 2009. The Center identifies, assesses and recognizes students with exceptional mathematical and/or verbal reasoning abilities. Last year, 31 percent of Mount Merici’s students in grades 4, 5 and 6 were invited to participate in the program based on results of annual standardized testing. Lea Ybarra, Executive Director of the Center, said participation at high levels is a mark of quality, suggesting the school has a solid core of very high achieving students.

Johns Hopkins Award"It reflects upon the school's academic quality, student abilities, and teacher talent," Ybarra said, commending the school’s leadership that encourages students to seek out "educational challenges beyond traditional school walls."

On yearly standardized testing, Mount Merici Academy students consistently demonstrate above-level proficiency. Compared nationally, last year’s fourth grade scores were equal to seventh grade scores; grade five students’ average scores were at the eighth grade level; and sixth graders, on average, scored at the tenth grade level.
